Marblehead Neck – Neighborhood Spotlight:

Marblehead Neck is a separate peninsula that extends to the east connected to the rest of town by a long sandbar, now a causeway. The neck has an area of 1.532 square miles. There is a Marblehead Neck Association which promotes works and activities that benefit its residents and that improve it as a residential section.

Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary: Consists of a 15.5 acre wooded area with a mile of trails looping through. The main entrance can be found at the end of Risley Road off of Ocean Ave. The entrance is flanked by two stone pillars. (Photo courtesy of the Marblehead Conservancy.)The Sanctuary is managed by the Massachusetts Audubon Society and was open to the public in 1954. It’s known to be a great place for bird-watching, nature study, walking, jogging and cross-country skiing in the winter.

Public Ways on the Neck: There are several public ways on the Neck that give access to beaches or the Ocean (See Map – courtesy of the Marblehead Conservancy).

(A) Desmoulin Lane: Off Ocean Ave. Leads to a rock ledge with great views and a good bass fishing spot.

(B) Fuller Lane: This paved lane off Ocean Avenue extends for 342 feet.

(D) Point-o-Rocks Lane: Leads to a rocky viewing point off of Follett Street.

(E) Lighthouse Lane: Leads from Follett Street to Chandler Hovey Park and the lighthouse.

(F) Cove Lane: Off Kimball Street. Leads to Cove Lane Beach.

(G) Nahant Street: Next to the CYC. Leads to a pebbled beach.

(H) Peabody Ave: Extends from Harbor Ave down to a beach.

(I) Harvard Street: Off Harbor Ave. Leads to a pebble beach.

(J) Parker Lane: Off Foster Street. Steps lead to a beach with a views across Marblehead Harbor.

Castle Rock Park: Located at 337 Ocean Ave, this 1.2 acre park gets its name from the castle like home it abuts. Originally this park was a lookout point for arriving and departing fishing fleets and pirate and enemy ships. Today it is a great spot to fish or sit on one of the benches and enjoy views of the Atlantic.

Chandler Hovey Park: This 3.74 acre park located off Follett Street offers amazing views of the Atlantic, benches, picnic tables, restrooms and parking. Chandler Hovey Park is also known as Lighthouse Point because it is also home to the Marblehead Light Tower.

Yacht Clubs: Marblehead Neck is home to three yacht clubs. The Eastern Yacht Club was established in 1870 and is located at 47 Foster Street. The Corinthian was organized in 1885 and is located at 1 Nahant Street. Pleon Yacht Club was established in 1887, all flag officers and members are sailors under 21. Pleon is the oldest junior yacht club in the United States.
